Game Overview

Spike in Transylvania came out for the Amiga in 1992, developed by Jester Interactive and published by Gremlin Graphics. It was one of those solid platformers that felt right at home on the system, with detailed pixel art and a spooky, cartoonish take on the Dracula mythos. You don't see many games like it anymore, but back then it was a decent way to spend an afternoon if you liked exploring monster-filled castles.

You control Spike, a little vampire hunter armed with a crossbow, moving screen by screen through a large, interconnected castle. Your main goal is to find and defeat Dracula, but to do that you need to collect a number of special keys hidden throughout the environment. The gameplay involves a lot of careful jumping over bottomless pits and dodging environmental traps like falling chandeliers or spike pits, while also shooting bats, ghosts, and other creatures that get in your way. The pacing is methodical; you have to watch your step and plan your route, because the levels are fairly challenging and death comes quickly if you're careless. It feels tense and deliberate, a game that rewards patience and precision over speed.
