Game Overview

Spirou on the Sega Genesis, released in 1995 by Infogrames, was one of those late platformers that arrived when the 16-bit era was already crowded with mascots. It didn't get a huge amount of attention at the time, but it had a certain charm that stood out if you were willing to give it a chance. The game is based on the long-running Belgian comic series, which wasn't as well known in some regions, making it a bit of an obscure find for Genesis owners.

You control the titular bellboy, Spirou, navigating through large, multi-path levels that scroll in all directions. Your main goal is to rescue your friend Spip the squirrel from the villainous Cyanida, which involves a lot of running, jumping, and using your environment. A key mechanic is grabbing and swinging from ropes to cross wide gaps or reach higher platforms. You also collect various power-ups, like a water pistol that temporarily stuns enemies, which is essential for dealing with the increasing number of foes. The pacing is fairly brisk, though some sections can feel a bit cluttered and the difficulty spikes noticeably in later stages. It feels like a chaotic, slightly janky cartoon adventure brought to life.
