Spoils of War came out in 1999 as part of the MS-DOS Classic Games collection from Digital Tome. It was a time when strategy games were finding their footing on home computers, and this one fit right in with its focus on direct, tactical control rather than grand empire building. It didn't try to overwhelm you with scale; it was more about the moment to moment decisions in a fight.
You control small squads of soldiers, moving them across grid based maps to engage enemy forces. The main goal is to eliminate all opposition or capture key structures, often through careful positioning and timing. Signature mechanics include flanking attacks for bonus damage, managing unit facing to protect vulnerable sides, and using terrain for defensive cover. The pacing is deliberate, and the difficulty is sharp; the AI exploits mistakes without mercy. It feels like a tense, thoughtful puzzle where every move matters.
Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
