Game Overview

Spy vs Spy on the NES came out in 1986 from First Star Software, a game that stood out in a sea of platformers and action titles. It was a two player focused experience, a rarity at the time, built entirely around outsmarting a human opponent rather than just beating a computer.

You control either the black or white spy, moving screen by screen through an embassy to find and collect three hidden briefcases before escaping on a plane. The real game is in the traps; you can plant bombs in drawers, hang anvils over doorways, or set up fake telephones, all while trying to deduce what your opponent has laid for you. The pacing is frantic, a constant back and forth of setting up ambushes and narrowly avoiding them yourself. It feels like a tense, ridiculous game of chess where every move could end in an explosive cartoon death.
