Game Overview

Star Odyssey was a Sega Genesis release from 1990, developed by Sega and published by Renovation Products in North America. It was part of that early wave of RPGs on the system, trying to carve out a space before the bigger, more polished titles arrived. The game presented a science fiction narrative, a less common setting compared to the fantasy epics that dominated the genre at the time.

You control a young man named Yu, navigating a mix of top-down exploration across planets and side-scrolling combat sequences. Your main goal is to uncover the mystery of your own forgotten past, which involves traveling between worlds, gathering clues, and assembling a crew for your ship. The combat is turn-based but plays out on a separate side-view screen where you input commands for physical attacks, special techniques, or magic. The pacing can feel slow, and the random encounter rate is punishingly high, making progress a deliberate and sometimes frustrating grind. It feels like a very earnest, slightly clunky attempt to blend traditional RPG systems with a more active visual presentation.
