Blast through dim Imperial corridors as mercenary Kyle Katarn, ducking behind crates to pick off stormtroopers with that satisfyingly chunky blaster echo. The maze-like levels and flickering droid factories still nail that eerie Star Wars underworld vibe decades later.

Star Wars: Dark Forces came out in 1995 for MS-DOS, developed and published by LucasArts. It was one of the earlier first-person shooters to really take advantage of the CD-ROM format, with detailed sprites and digitized sound that made it stand out among other games of the era. It felt like a natural step up from the sprite-based shooters that came before it, with a focus on atmosphere and level design that went beyond just running and gunning.
You play as Kyle Katarn, a mercenary working for the Rebel Alliance, tasked with uncovering the Empire's secret Dark Trooper project. The game mixes fast-paced shooting with exploration, requiring you to find keycards, flip switches, and navigate multi-layered environments. Its level design is often complex, with secrets hidden behind false walls and in ventilation shafts, encouraging thorough exploration. The pacing is deliberate; some areas are tense and quiet, while others erupt into frantic firefights against stormtroopers, officers, and droids. It feels immersive and tactical, especially when you're conserving ammo or hunting for the next objective in a sprawling Imperial base.
Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
