Starcross came out in 1982 from Infocom, one of the classic MS-DOS text adventures that relied on your imagination more than graphics. It was part of that era where you had to type everything out, and the parser was smart enough to understand complex sentences, which felt pretty advanced at the time.
You play as a lone astronaut exploring a massive, derelict alien ship, trying to figure out its purpose and survive its hazards. The main goal is to uncover the ship's secrets and find a way back home, all by interacting with objects and environments through typed commands. Key mechanics include navigating room by room, solving environmental puzzles, and managing limited inventory items under a time pressure. The pacing is deliberate, and the difficulty comes from missing subtle clues or misinterpreting the ship's bizarre logic. It feels like being truly isolated in deep space, where every decision carries weight.
Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
