I first played Steel Panthers back in 1995, when it came out as part of the MS-DOS Classic Games series from Mindscape. It was a detailed tactical wargame set in World War II, and it fit right in with the kind of thoughtful, complex strategy titles that were popular on PC at the time. You didn't need a flashy machine to run it, just patience and a willingness to learn its systems.
You command individual squads, vehicles, and weapons teams across a hex-based battlefield, with the goal of either seizing objectives or wiping out the enemy. Key mechanics include managing line of sight, accounting for terrain and cover, and tracking ammunition and morale for every unit. The pacing is deliberate, almost slow, and the difficulty can be punishing if you rush in. It feels like solving a deadly, dynamic puzzle where every decision has weight.
Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
