Stratego came out in 1990 as part of the MS-DOS Classic Games series, published by Capstone Software. It was a digital adaptation of the classic board game, fitting right in with the era's growing library of strategy titles that moved familiar tabletop experiences to the computer. You didn't need cutting edge graphics; it was about the thinking, the kind of game you'd load up after school on a beige desktop tower.

You control an entire army of forty pieces, each with a hidden rank, and place them on your side of the board before the match begins. The main objective is to capture your opponent's flag while protecting your own. The signature mechanics are the hidden information and deduction; you probe with weaker pieces to reveal your opponent's stronger ones, constantly bluffing about your own formations. The pacing is slow and deliberate, every move a calculated risk that can lead to a devastating loss or a brilliant trap. It feels like a tense, silent conversation where a single wrong assumption costs you the game.

Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
