Street Fighter Alpha 2 came out on the Super Nintendo in 1996, a time when the system was already showing its age against newer hardware. Capcom managed to squeeze a surprisingly faithful port onto the cartridge, complete with most of the roster and mechanics from the arcade version. It felt like a late, ambitious gift for SNES owners who hadn't moved on to the next generation of consoles.
You pick a fighter like Ryu or Chun-Li and face off against opponents in one-on-one matches, with the goal of depleting their life bar before they deplete yours. The game introduces the Alpha Counter, which lets you spend super meter to counter an opponent's attack immediately, and Custom Combos, a mode where you can unleash a flurry of normal attacks in a single, extended sequence. The pacing is fast, and the difficulty is steep, especially when trying to execute precise special moves on the SNES controller. It feels like a genuine test of execution and timing, demanding practice to pull off the moves that look so easy in the arcade.
