Game Overview

Suburban Commando came out in 1993 as part of the MS-DOS Classic Games collection, published by Absolute Entertainment. It was one of those early '90s titles that tried to capture the feel of the movie it was based on, a time when licensed games were often ambitious but hit-or-miss in execution. You play as Shep Ramsey, an intergalactic bounty hunter who crash-lands in a quiet suburban neighborhood, and the whole setup leans into that fish-out-of-water comedy the film was known for.

You control Shep directly, moving through side-scrolling levels that mix suburban backyards with alien-infested streets. Your main goal is to repair your ship by collecting parts scattered across the neighborhood, all while fending off waves of extraterrestrial enemies. The gameplay involves a lot of running and jumping between houses, using a mix of melee attacks with your fists and ranged shots from various alien weapons you pick up. Some stages have you dodging hazards like sprinklers and patio furniture, and the difficulty can spike unexpectedly with enemy swarms. It feels like a straightforward, slightly janky action platformer that doesn't overcomplicate things, but the sheer absurdity of mowing down aliens next to a barbecue grill gives it a weird charm.

Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
