Super Adventure Island came out for the Super Nintendo in 1992, developed by Hudson Soft. It was part of that early wave of SNES platformers, a time when developers were still figuring out how to use the system's power beyond what the NES could do. You control Master Higgins, who must rescue his girlfriend from an evil witch. You run and jump across a series of tropical islands, screen by screen, using weapons like a boomerang or a sword to defeat the various enemies that block your path. The main objective is simply to get to the end of each stage, but a constant hunger meter forces you to collect fruit scattered around the levels to stay alive. The pacing is fast, and the difficulty can be unforgiving, with instant death pits and aggressive enemy patterns. It feels like a constant, frantic dash against the clock and your own dwindling health.
