Super Adventure Island came out for the Super Nintendo in 1992, developed by Hudson Soft. It was part of that early wave of SNES platformers, before the heavy hitters like Donkey Kong Country really defined the system's later look. It had a bright, simple style that felt very much of its time.

You control the hero, Higgins, who is constantly losing health from hunger. Your main goal is to get through each stage, defeating enemies and finding the exit, but you have to keep grabbing fruit just to stay alive. The levels scroll automatically, so you're always moving forward, and you use a short-range sword attack against the various creatures in your path. You can also find temporary power-ups, like a skateboard that makes you invincible but harder to control. The game moves at a brisk pace and the difficulty can spike unexpectedly with tricky jumps and enemy placements. It feels like a constant, slightly frantic scramble to survive.
