Super Mario Advance 3: Yoshi’s Island is one of those games that sticks with you—not just because it’s Mario-adjacent, but because it’s so weirdly charming. Instead of playing as Mario, you’re Yoshi, carting around a crying baby version of him (seriously, the wailing never stops) through these dreamy, pastel-colored levels that look like they were scribbled by a kid with too many crayons.
Yoshi’s stretchy tongue and egg-throwing feel surprisingly satisfying—you’ll be snatching up shy guys and lobbing eggs at floating platforms like it’s second nature. And then there are the transformations, like turning into a helicopter or a submarine, which somehow never get old. The game’s got this deceptive cuteness, too—some later levels will absolutely wreck you if you’re not careful.
It’s a GBA port of the SNES classic, but it holds up stupidly well. The art style is still gorgeous, and the added minigames are a nice little bonus. If you’ve never played it, you’re missing out on one of the most inventive platformers ever made.
