The power-ups change how you approach levels—the raccoon tail lets you slow-fall over gaps, the frog suit turns water sections from a chore into something fun. It's not just about running right anymore.

Some of the later worlds get brutal if you're not careful with your power-ups. I remember losing the hammer suit in world 7 and having to grind through a dozen lives just to get past one autoscrolling airship level. Frustrating, but fair.
