Game Overview
Super Mario Quest (Final Fantasy Hack) is one of those weird but fun NES rom hacks where Mario gets thrown into a JRPG-style adventure. You still jump on enemies, but now there's turn-based combat, random encounters, and gear upgrades—like finding a fire flower that boosts your attack stat instead of just shooting fireballs.
The first few minutes feel familiar—running left to right, hitting blocks—until you trigger a battle screen and suddenly you're picking "attack" or "item" from a menu. The mash-up works better than you'd think, though some of the difficulty spikes feel unfair when you're grinding coins just to afford a better hammer.
It's janky in that classic rom hack way—some sprites are clearly edited last-minute, and the music cuts in and out—but there's charm in seeing Mario cast "cure" or fight palette-swapped goombas with 50 HP. If you're into oddball retro mods, this one's worth a look.
