Super Mario World originally launched on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in 1990, developed and published by Nintendo. It was a defining title for the console, building on the side scrolling platforming foundation of its predecessors while introducing a more expansive world map and several mechanics that would become series staples.
You control Mario, or Luigi, navigating levels filled with enemies and obstacles, with the goal of rescuing Princess Peach from Bowser. The game introduces Yoshi, a dinosaur companion you can ride to eat enemies and gain special abilities based on the color of shells he consumes, and the Cape Feather, which allows for extended flight and spinning attacks. The pacing is brisk, with a difficulty curve that gradually introduces new challenges without becoming overly punishing. It feels responsive and inventive, encouraging experimentation with its various power ups and secret exits.
