Super Metroid - Darkness Returns feels like slipping back into your favorite worn-out spacesuit—familiar, but with new dents and surprises. The first thing that hits you is that unmistakable atmosphere: dim corridors, distant alien screeches, and that eerie hum of machinery. But then you turn a corner and realize this isn’t just Zebes recycled—there are new rooms to get lost in, enemies that make you rethink your usual strategies, and upgrades tucked away in places that’ll have you bombing every suspicious wall.

The controls are butter-smooth, just like the original, so you’ll be wall-jumping and morph-balling like it’s 1994. But don’t get too comfortable—some of the new bosses? Brutal in the best way. I died more than once to a particularly nasty one that fills the screen with projectiles, and I loved every second of figuring it out. The music’s still all moody synths and echoing choirs, but there are new tracks that fit right in without feeling like cheap imitations.

If you’ve ever finished Super Metroid and thought, “I wish there was just… more,” this is it. It’s the unofficial DLC we never got.
