If you've played Super Metroid enough times that you can map Zebes in your sleep, MockingBird Station is the fan hack that'll actually surprise you. It’s not just shuffled rooms or harder enemies—someone really sat down and reimagined how the whole thing flows. The first time I dropped into Brinstar and realized the usual path was gone, I actually laughed. In a good way.

They kept the eerie vibe and chunky 16-bit atmosphere (that soundtrack still slaps), but the level layouts force you to think differently. Power-ups pop up where you least expect them, and some of the boss tweaks had me muttering "oh come ON" at my CRT. It’s the kind of hack that makes speedrunners grin and lore nerds scour every tile for new secrets. Feels like finding a dusty SNES cart you somehow never played before.

Just don’t blame me when you get stuck in some sideways version of Norfair for an hour.
