Super Tennis came out on the Super Nintendo in 1991, published by Tokyo Shoseki. It was one of the early sports titles for the system, arriving around the same time as other foundational games that helped define the console's library. It didn't try to be a flashy arcade port; it was a straightforward, dedicated tennis simulation built for home play.
You control a tennis player from an overhead perspective, moving them around the court to return shots and win points. The main objective is to compete in tournaments, climbing the world rankings by defeating a series of computer opponents. The gameplay hinges on timing your swings for different shot types, like lobs and slices, while also managing your player's stamina and positioning. Matches can be tense and methodical, demanding patience and careful shot placement rather than frantic button mashing. It feels satisfying to outmaneuver an opponent and set up a winning shot they can't possibly return.
