Super Turrican 2 came out for the Super Nintendo in 1995, developed by Factor 5. It arrived late in the system's life, when developers were really pushing the hardware to its limits. The game is a side-scrolling run and gun title, part of a genre that was well established by that point, but it stood out for its technical ambition and sheer intensity.
You control a heavily armed soldier, moving through large, multi-directional stages filled with alien enemies and environmental hazards. Your main goal is simply to survive each level and defeat the boss waiting at the end. Your character has a few key tools: a standard blaster that can be charged for a wide-area attack, a grappling hook for swinging across gaps, and the ability to curl into a wheel to roll quickly and smash through certain obstacles. The pacing is relentless, and the difficulty is high, demanding quick reflexes and smart use of all your abilities. It feels like a constant, explosive assault on the senses, backed by one of the best soundtracks on the system.
