Game Overview

I first played Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles on the NES back in 1990, a Konami release that felt right at home on the system. It was one of those games that showed up at every friend's house, usually with a worn label and a save file already full of failed attempts. The box art promised a colorful brawler, but the game itself had a surprising amount of exploration, something not every licensed title bothered with back then.

You control one of the four turtles, switching between them on the fly as you navigate a side-scrolling New York. Your main goal is to rescue April O'Neil and Splinter from Shredder's clutches. The gameplay mixes straightforward beat-'em-up sections with more deliberate, screen-by-screen overworld exploration; you drive the Turtle Van through a top-down map to reach new areas. Combat is simple, using your character's unique weapon, but the difficulty spikes sharply, especially in the infamous underwater dam level where disarming bombs requires precise timing. It feels like a genuine challenge from that era, demanding patience and memorization more than raw skill.
