You choose from a roster that includes the four turtles, along with some allies and villains like April and Shredder. The goal is to beat your opponent in one-on-one fights across several rounds, using a combination of basic attacks, special moves, and super attacks that build up as you land hits. The controls are responsive for an NES fighter; pulling off Donatello’s staff spin or Raphael’s rapid sai strikes requires precise timing. Matches are fast and can be pretty tough, especially against later CPU opponents who read your moves a little too well. It captures the feel of a proper arcade style fighter, condensed into 8-bit form.
