Game Overview

If you grew up mashing buttons in Street Fighter II but wished it had more pizza and mutant reptiles, TMNT: Tournament Fighters on the Sega Genesis is your jam. The European version calls them "Hero Turtles" for some reason—probably some weird '90s censorship—but don’t worry, they still fight like ninjas. You’ve got all four turtles, Splinter, and even Shredder throwing down in surprisingly fluid 16-bit brawls.

What surprised me was how good it feels to play. Raphael’s spinning sai attack actually looks like it hurts, and Donnie’s staff has this satisfying reach that’s perfect for keeping enemies at bay. The stages are packed with little TMNT Easter eggs too, like neon-lit rooftops and sewer backdrops that could’ve been ripped straight from the cartoon. And that soundtrack? Pure synth-rock adrenaline—you’ll pause just to listen.

It’s not as famous as Turtles in Time, but if you’re into competitive fighters with a heavy dose of nostalgia, this one’s a blast. Just try not to yell "cowabunga" after landing a super move. (You will.)
