Game Overview

Konami released Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles III: Radical Rescue for the Game Boy in 1993. It was the third and final TMNT game on the system, arriving at a time when handheld platformers were often ambitious, if constrained by the hardware. This one tried something different, moving away from the linear action of its predecessors.

You start the game controlling only Michelangelo, exploring a large, interconnected map screen by screen to find and rescue your captured brothers. Each turtle you free becomes playable, and they all handle uniquely: Donatello breaks certain walls with his staff, Leonardo throws his swords for ranged attacks, and Raphael moves faster and climbs specific surfaces. The main goal is to locate and defeat the bosses holding each turtle captive, which requires thoughtful character switching to overcome environmental obstacles. The pacing is deliberate, with plenty of backtracking and experimentation needed to progress. It feels like a careful, exploratory puzzle dressed in turtle gear.
