Doom Troopers: Mutant Chronicles came out for the Sega Genesis in 1995, developed by Adrenalin Entertainment and published by Playmates. It was part of that wave of licensed games trying to capture the grim, industrial sci-fi look that was popular at the time, fitting right in with the console's library of action-heavy titles.
You choose between two characters, Mitch Hunter or Max Steiner, and move through levels screen by screen, clearing out mutants with a variety of weapons like shotguns, flamethrowers, and grenade launchers. The main goal is straightforward: survive each stage, defeat the boss, and move on. Ammo management is critical; you can easily waste your best weapons on common enemies and find yourself under-equipped for tougher fights. The pacing is relentless, with enemies swarming from all sides, and the difficulty can spike without much warning. It feels like a constant, tense scramble for resources while trying to push forward.
