Phantasy Star III is one of those weird, ambitious RPGs that tried something totally different—and honestly, it kinda works? You start as Rhys, a prince whose wedding gets crashed by some mysterious kidnappers (classic), and suddenly you're off on a rescue mission that spirals into this multi-generational saga.
The combat and exploration feel familiar if you've played older Phantasy Star games—turn-based battles, maze-like dungeons, the usual—but the setting throws you for a loop. Instead of sci-fi cities and laser guns, you’re in a straight-up medieval fantasy world… at least until later, when things get weird in the best way.
What really stands out is the generation system. At key moments, you pick who your hero marries, and the story branches based on that choice. Your kids inherit the quest, then their kids, and suddenly you’re three generations deep with a completely different party depending on who you picked way back when. It’s janky in places, but there’s nothing else quite like it on the Genesis.
Just don’t expect it to play like Phantasy Star II or IV—this one’s its own strange, moody thing.
