Game Overview

Konami released Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles II: The Arcade Game for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1991. It was a direct port of the popular arcade cabinet, bringing that chaotic beat 'em up action home. For NES owners at the time, it was a big deal to get such a faithful translation of a coin-op experience, complete with the four turtles and their signature personalities.

You control one of the four turtles, moving from left to right through New York City streets and sewers, clearing each screen of enemies before progressing. Your main objective is to fight through waves of Foot Soldiers and other villains to rescue April O'Neil and Splinter. The signature mechanics include using your character's unique weapon for basic attacks and a special spinning jump move that damages all nearby foes, though it temporarily shrinks your health bar. You also break open manhole covers and other objects to find pizzas that restore your life. The pacing is fast and the difficulty is relentless, especially in later stages where enemies swarm from all sides. It feels like a genuine, frantic scramble against an endless tide of Foot Clan nonsense.
