Game Overview

Man, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles – The Legend Returns caught me off guard—I popped it into my Genesis expecting another button-masher, but nope. You actually have to think before swinging that bo staff. The turn-based combat makes fights feel tactical—like when Donnie’s tech moves actually matter more than just spamming attacks. And that pause before you pick your move? Weirdly tense when a swarm of Foot Clan ninjas are closing in.

The pixel art nails that grimy NYC vibe—storm drains, neon signs, the whole deal—but what got me was the soundtrack. That bass-heavy shredding while you’re picking between Raphael’s sai throw or a group sweep? Pure ‘90s. It’s not perfect (why does Leo’s special take so long to charge?), but it’s one of those games where you can tell the devs actually cared about doing something different with the turtles. Shell shocks included.
