Game Overview

I picked up The Legend of Prince Valiant on the NES back in 1992, a game developed by Ocean Software. It was one of those many licensed titles that came out late in the console's life, trying to capture the feel of other action adventure games of the time. The graphics and music were decent for the era, but it didn't stand out much from the crowd at first glance.

You control Prince Valiant, moving screen by screen through forests, castles, and dungeons. Your main goal is to rescue your father, the king, who has been kidnapped. You use a sword for close combat and a bow for ranged attacks, though arrows are limited. You also collect pieces of a broken shield to progress, which involves a fair amount of backtracking and exploration. The game can be frustratingly difficult at times, with enemies that respawn quickly and some awkward platforming. It feels like a rough but earnest attempt at an adventure, where every small victory actually matters.
