Konami released Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 3: Mutant Nightmare on the Nintendo DS in 2005. It was a time when the dual screens and touch capabilities of the handheld were still fresh, and this title tried to make use of that hardware. The game continues the story from the animated series, putting players right back into the Turtles' ongoing fight against the Foot Clan and other mutant threats.

You control one of the four Turtles, switching between them to take on waves of enemies in side-scrolling beat 'em up stages. The main goal is to fight through each level, defeat the boss, and progress the story. Each Turtle has a unique weapon and move set; for example, Donatello uses his bo staff for longer reach, while Raphael attacks quickly with his sais. The touch screen is used for special attacks and swapping characters on the fly. The pacing is fairly quick, with levels that are short but packed with action, though some later stages can get tough with enemy numbers. It feels like a solid, portable brawler that captures the energy of the cartoon.
