I first played The Combatribes on the Super Nintendo back in 1992. It was developed by Technos Japan, the same team behind the Double Dragon series, and it fit right in with the era's love for over the top, side scrolling beat 'em ups. You weren't saving princesses or exploring dungeons; you were just cleaning up the streets, one thug at a time.
You pick one of three vigilantes, each with their own slightly different feel, and fight through screen after screen of punks in a city taken over by gangs. The main goal is simple: get to the end of the stage and defeat the boss. What makes it stand out are the throws; you can grab an enemy, spin them around by their legs, and launch them into a whole group. You can also pick up weapons like pipes or even motorcycles to swing at people. The pacing is fast and the difficulty can spike pretty hard, especially when you get swarmed. It feels chaotic and a little clumsy, but in a way that makes every victory satisfying.
