In The Scoop, you play a reporter exploring a city, talking to sources, gathering clues, and racing to uncover a big story before your rival does.
I first played The Scoop back in the early 90s, a 1990 release from Telarium that was part of their MS-DOS Classic Games lineup. It was a time when adventure games were heavy on text and light on hand-holding, and this one fit right in with its newspaper noir theme. You don't see many games trying to be a journalist, especially not back then.
You control a reporter racing against a rival to break a major story. The game plays out screen by screen across a city map; you talk to sources, gather clues, and type commands to investigate leads or examine objects. The main challenge is figuring out who to trust and what details matter before your competition gets the story first. It moves at a deliberate pace, and missing a key interview can force a restart. Getting that front page headline after untangling all the lies feels like a real victory.
Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
