If you've ever wished a dusty old Choose Your Own Adventure book could fight back, The Usurper - The Mines Of Qyntarr is basically that—but with way more ways to die horribly. This MS-DOS text adventure drops you into a world where every "go north" or "bribe the guard" decision actually matters, and the mines feel alive in that eerie, pixelated way only '90s games managed.
At first, I kept getting stabbed by bandits because I tried to talk my way out of everything. Turns out sometimes you just need to swing a sword. The writing's surprisingly sharp for something running on what might as well be a digital toaster, and the tension builds as you realize that one wrong move could mean losing hours of progress. No hand-holding here.
It’s ugly by modern standards, sure, but there’s something weirdly satisfying about outmaneuvering rival factions with nothing but your wits and a handful of gold coins. Just save often—Qyntarr doesn’t forgive mistakes.
