Game Overview

Tony Hawk’s American Sk8land on the GBA is shockingly good for a handheld port—like, how did they cram those smooth controls and ridiculous combos into a tiny cartridge? The cel-shaded art style holds up way better than you’d expect, and the levels feel alive with ramps, rails, and hidden gaps begging to be exploited.

You start by tweaking your skater’s look (I always go for the most obnoxious shoes possible) and then dive into missions that actually have personality—rescuing a skatepark from some corporate goons who want to turn it into a parking lot. The objectives keep things interesting, whether you’re grinding phone booths or launching off rooftops to smash security cameras.

What really sticks with me is the soundtrack. It’s compressed, sure, but those punk riffs still slap when you’re stringing together a monster combo. If you’ve got a soft spot for the PS1-era Tony Hawk games, this one’s a surprisingly faithful pocket-sized version.
