Play Tony Hawk's American Sk8land (E)(Rising Sun) Online

You carve through neon Tokyo alleys and L.A. plazas, pulling off ridiculous combos with that same satisfying flow from the console games—just pocket-sized now. The tiny 3D skater moves shockingly smooth for a GBA cart.

Game Overview

Tony Hawk’s American Sk8land on GBA is one of those rare handheld ports that actually nails the feel of the console games. The first thing you’ll notice is how surprisingly good the 3D-style graphics look—like someone squeezed a PS2 game into this tiny cartridge without losing the speed or fluidity.

You start by creating some little pixelated skater dude (or girl), then immediately get thrown into these condensed but perfectly designed levels. Tokyo’s all neon and narrow alley gaps, while L.A. has these wide-open plazas perfect for stringing together stupidly long combos. The controls take a minute to click if you’re used to the console versions, but once they do, you’ll be hitting kickflip-backside grabs like it’s nothing.

What I love is how they kept the soul of Tony Hawk’s games—the hidden tapes, the ridiculous objectives, that itch to retry a line until you nail it. The cel-shaded style gives it this almost comic-book vibe that still looks cool today. Just don’t be surprised when you lose an hour trying to beat your own high score on the subway rails.
