Play UFO: Enemy Unknown (X-COM: UFO Defense) Online
You juggle interceptors and research while scrambling rookies to crash sites, then sweat through turn-based firefights where one wrong move means burying your best soldier.
UFO: Enemy Unknown, also known as X-COM: UFO Defense in North America, came out in 1994 for MS-DOS from developers Mythos Games and publisher MicroProse. It was part of that wave of deep, complex strategy games that really asked for your full attention, running on machines where managing memory was still a regular part of the setup process.
You command a global paramilitary force responding to an alien invasion, managing everything from building bases and researching captured technology to funding pleas from panicked nations. The core experience splits between a strategic overview of the Earth and tense, turn-based tactical missions where you direct individual soldiers through alien crash sites and terror zones, using action points for movement, shooting, and careful positioning. The pacing is deliberate, often brutal; losing a high-ranking soldier to a hidden alien or a nation cutting funding because you failed them carries real weight. It feels like a constant, gripping struggle where every decision, both on and off the battlefield, has tangible and often punishing consequences.
Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
