Game Overview

Ultima: Runes of Virtue II came out for the Game Boy in 1993, developed by Origin Systems. It was one of the few action RPGs on the handheld at the time, offering a condensed version of the Ultima world that felt ambitious for the small screen. You didn't see many games like it back then, with its focus on puzzle solving and exploration instead of just combat.

You control the Avatar, moving screen by screen through a series of themed dungeons. Your main goal is to collect eight magic runes by solving environmental puzzles, fighting monsters, and avoiding traps like fire jets and false floors. Combat is simple; you just swing your sword when enemies get close, but you have to manage your health carefully because healing items are scarce. The pacing is deliberate, often requiring you to backtrack or think through a room's hazards before proceeding. It feels like a thoughtful, sometimes tense puzzle box that rewards patience over haste.
