Game Overview

Ultima: Runes of Virtue II came out on the Super Nintendo in 1994, developed by Origin Systems. It was part of that wave of top-down action RPGs that felt right at home on the SNES, offering a colorful, grid-based world to explore without the hardware limitations of earlier portable versions. The game didn't try to reinvent the wheel, but it delivered a solid dungeon-crawling experience that fit well within the console's library.

You control the Avatar, moving screen by screen through forests, towns, and multi-level dungeons. Your main goal is to recover the Runes of Virtue, scattered by the evil Black Knight. You fight monsters in real time with a sword or a bow, solve environmental puzzles by pushing blocks or finding hidden switches, and collect keys and potions to progress. The pacing is deliberate, with some challenging enemy patterns and puzzles that require careful observation. It feels satisfying to methodically clear each area, uncovering secrets and steadily growing stronger as you piece the world together.
