Vigilance on Talos V is one of those old-school MS-DOS gems that feels like a weird, moody mix of Metroid and a sci-fi revenge flick. You play as Killian Jaraad, a guy who watched his daughter get taken by alien freaks and spent three years turning himself into a walking arsenal just to get her back. Now he’s storming through the Talos V system, blasting through Xenos bases with a seriously cool (and kinda excessive) loadout.

The first thing you’ll notice? The weapons are ridiculous in the best way. Plasma shots melt doors, heat seekers auto-track enemies, and there’s even a flamethrower—though the game casually warns you not to "waste it on just anyone." My personal favorite? The Saturn Ball. Crouch into a ball, roll through tight tunnels, and plant bombs to blow open hidden paths. It’s janky but satisfying when you pull it off.

Exploring feels like a puzzle—X-ray goggles reveal hidden passages, grapple hooks let you swing over gaps, and energy tanks are scattered just sparingly enough to keep you nervous. The whole thing’s got this grimy, pixelated atmosphere where every new area feels like you’re peeling back another layer of some alien horror show. Just watch out for Drektor—the guy’s a shapeshifting nightmare, and the game doesn’t make finding him easy.

It’s clunky by modern standards, but there’s something raw about how committed it is to being this intense, weapon-heavy odyssey. If you’re into retro sci-fi with a side of melodrama, this one’s worth digging up.
