Vixen came out in 1988 as part of the MS-DOS Classic Games series, published by Martech. It was one of those side-scrolling platformers that felt right at home on a beige desktop computer, with chunky pixels and a simple, straightforward premise. You played as a fox-like character, darting through levels that mixed above-ground running with underground treasure hunting.
You control the vixen herself, moving left and right across the screen, whipping enemies and collecting gems and fox tokens. The main goal is to gather enough tokens before the timer expires; doing so lets you transform and access hidden underground areas packed with power-ups and extra loot. The pacing is quick, and the difficulty comes from managing time while avoiding enemies and environmental hazards. It feels tense but rewarding when you pull off a clean run and dive below to claim your prizes.
Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
