Game Overview

Warlords II Deluxe is one of those old-school strategy games that somehow still holds up. You start with a single city and a hero, and before long you're sending scouts into the fog of war, bribing neutral towns to join you, and nervously eyeing your neighbor's growing army of knights. The turns fly by—you're never stuck waiting too long, even with eight players.

What I love is how simple it looks (those pixel-art castles!) but how sneaky the strategy gets. Do you rush your hero into battle early or keep them safe to level up? Should you spend gold on diplomacy or just build more catapults? The AI puts up a decent fight, but the real fun is hotseat multiplayer—nothing beats watching a friend's face when your hidden dragon ambushes their prized paladin.

It's aged surprisingly well for a '93 game, mostly because it cuts out the bloat and just lets you scheme, betray, and conquer. Still one of the best ways to lose an afternoon to medieval backstabbing.
