Game Overview

Western Front: The Liberation of Europe 1944โ€“1945 came out in 1991 as part of the MS-DOS Classic Games series, developed by Strategic Simulations, Inc. It was a solid wargame for its time, sitting alongside other hex-based strategy titles that demanded patience and planning rather than quick reflexes. You could feel the weight of history in its scenarios, even with the limited graphics and interface of early PC gaming.

You take command of Allied forces, managing infantry, armor, and artillery across a series of operational maps. The main goal is to break through German defensive lines, capture key objectives, and ultimately push into the heart of Europe. Key mechanics include detailed supply management, terrain effects on movement and combat, and phased turn resolution where both sides execute orders. The pacing is deliberate, almost slow, and the difficulty can be punishing if you overextend or ignore logistics. It feels like conducting a cautious, costly advance where every victory comes with real losses.

Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
