Game Overview

World Heroes on the Super Nintendo came out in 1992, a port of the Alpha Denshi arcade fighter. It was part of that early wave of SNES releases where you got a lot of arcade translations, some smoother than others. This one always felt a bit rough around the edges compared to the bigger names at the time.

You pick a fighter from a cast of historical and fictional characters, like a ninja or a Viking, and then battle one-on-one across a series of stages. The main goal is to deplete your opponent's life bar using basic punches, kicks, and special moves, which often involve awkwardly timed button combinations. Two notable mechanics are the Death Match arenas, which feature hazards like electric fences or spikes on the walls, and a super attack that builds up as you take damage. The pacing is slow, the difficulty can feel cheap, and landing a hit doesn't have a lot of weight to it. It feels like you're fighting the controls as much as the person on the other side of the screen.
