Xargon came out in 1993, published by Epic MegaGames, back when MS-DOS was the place to be for shareware platformers. It fit right in with the era's colorful, side-scrolling action games, offering a solid mix of exploration and straightforward combat without a lot of fuss.
You control Malvineous, a hero armed initially with a weak laser, and you move screen by screen through themed worlds, clearing enemies and hunting for keys to unlock doors. The game throws a lot at you: you collect power-ups to improve your shots, from rocks to fireballs, and you often gamble on mystery boxes that might give you something useful or just blow up in your face. The pacing is brisk, and some sections get pretty tough with enemy placements and tricky jumps. It feels satisfying to methodically clear each area and build up your firepower as you push further in.
Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
