Game Overview

Yoshi no Banyuuinryoku came out on the Game Boy Advance in 2006, a late release for the system when the Nintendo DS was already out. It was developed by Artoon and published by Nintendo, a follow-up to Yoshi's Universal Gravitation, which had a different name in Japan. This was a time when developers were still finding interesting ways to use the GBA hardware, and this game was one of the more experimental ones.

You control Yoshi, but you don't use the d-pad to move him. Instead, you physically tilt the entire Game Boy Advance to make him walk left or right. The main goal is to get through each side-scrolling stage, flipping gravity to make Yoshi walk on the ceiling or walls to avoid obstacles and reach the exit. You also use a flicking motion to make him use his tongue to grab items or attack enemies. The pacing is deliberate; you have to think about your tilts to solve environmental puzzles without falling. It feels a little awkward at first, but there's a unique satisfaction in physically maneuvering through the levels.
