Game Overview

Pool of Radiance came out for the NES in 1992, a port of the earlier computer game developed by Strategic Simulations, Inc. and published by FCI. It was one of the few attempts to bring a complex, party-based Advanced Dungeons & Dragons experience to the console, arriving at a time when most Nintendo RPGs favored more straightforward, action-oriented adventures.

You control a custom party of up to six adventurers, navigating the ruined city of Phlan from a top-down perspective, screen by screen. The main goal is to cleanse the city of evil forces by completing quests, battling monsters in tactical, turn-based combat, and delving into dungeons. Key mechanics include managing your party's equipment and spells carefully, and engaging enemies on a separate grid-based battle screen where positioning matters. The game is notoriously difficult, demanding patience and strategic planning as you explore. It feels like a demanding, thoughtful puzzle where every combat encounter could be your last.
