Advanced Dungeons & Dragons: Heroes of the Lance came out for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1988, published by U.S. Gold. It was one of the earlier attempts to bring a Dungeons & Dragons experience to the console, arriving during a time when many developers were still figuring out how to translate complex role playing mechanics to a controller.
You control a party of eight heroes from the Dragonlance novels, switching between them to use their unique abilities like a fighter's strength or a cleric's healing. The game is a side scrolling action adventure where you explore towns and dungeons screen by screen, fighting monsters with swords, bows, and spells. Your main goal is to find the Disks of Mishakal, which involves a lot of backtracking and dealing with some unforgiving platforming sections. The pacing is slow, the difficulty is high, and it often feels like a brutal test of patience. Playing it is a constant battle against the game's own clunky design.
