Play Advanced Dungeons & Dragons - Pool of Radiance Online
Explore the cursed city of Phlan, build your custom party, engage in tactical turn-based combat, and cleanse the ruins of evil in this classic RPG.
I first played Pool of Radiance on the NES back in 1992, a port of the earlier computer game by Strategic Simulations, Inc. It was one of the few attempts to bring a full Dungeons & Dragons experience to the console, arriving late in the system's life when players were hungry for deeper, more complex adventures. It stood out for its commitment to the rules, even if the hardware sometimes struggled to keep up.
You control a custom party of up to six characters, each with their own class, stats, and inventory, navigating the cursed city of Phlan from a top-down perspective. The goal is to cleanse the city by defeating the evil occupying its ruins, which involves methodical, screen-by-screen exploration of wilderness and dungeons. Combat is turn-based and tactical, unfolding on a separate grid where positioning and spell selection really matter; you have to manage limited spells per day and keep a close eye on hit points. The pace is deliberate, even slow, and the difficulty is unforgiving if you wander into areas you aren't prepared for. It feels like solving a dangerous, persistent puzzle with your party's survival always on the line.
