Ape Escape: On the Loose came out on the PlayStation Portable in 2005, developed by SCE Japan Studio. It was a remake of the original PlayStation game, and it fit right in with the PSP's early library of action platformers. You control Spike, a young boy tasked with capturing monkeys that have escaped into different time periods. Your main goal is to net these primates using an assortment of gadgets, like a stun club, a remote-controlled car, and a slingshot. The monkeys all have distinct behaviors; some run when they see you, others throw fruit, and a few just sit there until you sneak up. The pacing is brisk, and the difficulty gradually increases as you explore each themed level. It feels satisfying to finally catch that one monkey that's been dodging you for minutes.
